Oleander School for Negro Publishers affirms our ability to freely produce, preserve and distribute our own knowledges. It’s reaching beyond the ends of our world into the ashes, searching for what comes next. This work is rooted in a vision of Black, queer, ecowomanist resistance to miseducation and fierce belief in a liberated future.

We’re activating the @baltimorefreeschool at Red Emma’s to offer 10 hands-on, in-person workshops to Black publishers of all experience levels in Baltimore. We’ll also hold open studio time for cohort members to play, recharge, and cultivate collaboration as they bring their publications from concept through distribution.

This project was conceptualized by MacKenzie River

Suryah Studio will be offering a workshop titled "Earth To Ink" that will teach participants the basics of ink making for art, design, and publishing using pigments, iron, and other agricultural products from the earth. The cohort for this series has been selected, and applications for this offering are now closed.

This offering is generously supported in part by the Maryland State Arts Council

This initiative is still seeking further funds to support our cohort, organizers and instructors.
